New Police Story was a bit grim, Police Story: Lockdown looks equally gloomy, and The Foreigner just sounds bleak as hell. From what I can gather, this desire to strip out the laughs and produce downbeat drama began in earnest with Crime Story. You can understand Jackie's motivation.
